Côte d'Ivoire: Ouattara, Bédié, Gbagbo... Rendez-vous in 2025!

August 29th, 2022

The Côte d'Ivoire of 2022 has nothing to do with the one that has been worrying us for the past two years, and so much the better. The deaths of Amadou Gon Coulibaly and Hamed Bakayoko, which led Alassane Ouattara to renege on his commitment not to run for a third term; the pre- and post-election crisis during the October 2020 presidential elections; the constant political tensions and quarrels; the Covid-19 epidemic... Since this sinister sequence, reason has finally prevailed, and it is time for appeasement. Ouattara has been re-elected, Laurent Gbagbo, acquitted by the International Criminal Court (ICC), has returned to Côte d'Ivoire, and Henri Konan Bédié has put water in his champagne. The head of state even met with his two predecessors and long-time adversaries, and the trio are once again "brothering" each other, at least in front of microphones and cameras. Finally, the political dialogue, led by Prime Minister Patrick Achi, who has just been reappointed, was a great success, in the opinion of the opposition delegates, illustrating a return to normalcy that we had lost the habit of.
